I do both Pilates and yoga. I teach both Pilates (only on the mat) and yoga. I enjoy them both.
I have been asked so many times about what is the difference between the two or which one is best for them. That’s not always a short or easy answer.
Pilates is very strengthening and toning, but yoga tones too. Yoga is great for improving flexibility, but Pilates will help some too.
It’s also surprising (I don’t know why, but it is) that so many people think that they are the same thing. By the same thing they mean nothing but stretching. Both Pilates and yoga are challenging. Not in the running for 45 minutes uphill kind of hard, but challenging.
I came across this inforgraph on Health Perch, and thought it did a pretty good job at laying out some of the differences and similarities. There are some other differences and similarities (especially depending on the type of yoga you are comparing), but it’s good base for those that are interested.
