5 Healthy Travel Tips

I’m having major wanderlust right now. I have this ongoing list of places that I would love to visit. I have friends in different cities that I continuously say that I should visit. Pretty much the travel bug is in my blood, it’s just something that I wish I did more frequently.

One of the things about travel that can be good or bad is the change in the daily schedule. Sometimes taking a break from things like work or stress is needed, but sometimes the change in schedule can lead to indulging in rich foods, basically swimming in alcohol, and not a thought towards working out.

Here are 5 things to keep in mind when staying healthy while traveling:

Plan Ahead

Healthy life on the road does not come easy, and it can take a little bit of effort. It may be that while sitting on the plane you plan out a workout. While it may not sound fun, but many swear by working out as soon as they get to the hotel gym or finding a class ASAP in order to help with jet lag. Speaking about jet lag plan trips as best as possible in order to help prevent some of the fatigue and exhaustion.

Squeeze in a Workout When Able

Like above sometimes it may not be when you want to workout. If travelling for work your workout might be early in the morning or late at night. If taking a phone call get up and walk around, do some squats or lunges.

Bodyweight Workouts

I swear by bodyweight workouts many days. If your hotel doesn’t have a gym or you don’t want to find a class somewhere use your body. Set a timer and run through a few circuits. Think push ups, lunges, squats, jump squats, planks, triceps dips, crunches, etc. When making workouts for travelling clients I primarily stick to bodyweight circuits with some options thrown in. Not feeling like a circuit or push ups, do some yoga, Pilates, or use the back of a chair like a ballet barrre and do some barre exercises.

Don’t Rely on Room Service

Food is obviously so important for health, and even if you don’t get in the best workout you still have to eat. Don’t settle for room service. Look up some options near by. If able you can even walk to dinner. Pack food for the road or flight. Think avocados, bananas, nuts, etc. If at a resort or somewhere where you have to eat what’s provided then do your best. Stick to fresh fruits, veggies, rice, grilled or baked meats, etc. If you want a drink or dessert then have it, especially if on vacation. Drink water. Eat as healthy as able. There will be times that the ribs are the best option, that’s life.

Work Out While Exploring

Simply go outside. Walk or jog when you can. If travelling for business, you may be in an awesome city stuck in meetings all day, and not wanting to go to a hotel gym. Go out for a jog or rent a bikeĀ and explore the city some. At the beach, get up and walk the beach. Sometimes just a 30 minute walk and some fresh air can make you feel like a new person.
